At our old house, my office was in the basement and I had good separation from the noise in other parts of the house. In our current home, my office is on the main floor and I have glass doors that do next to nothing to block sound or sight. For some reason, I only started doing this about two years ago, after I had already been working from home for eight years or more.

Growing a Business
My home office is always right there, so I usually wind up checking my email or going into my office at some point every evening, and definitely on the weekends. This really depends on your personality and not everyone will thrive in a work-from-home setting. Some people like or need interaction with others, and if that applies to you, working from home is probably not a good fit for you. If my wife has to go somewhere for an appointment, I can take off for an hour or two and watch the kids while she’s gone. That flexibility comes in very handy for making appointments, whether it’s an appointment to go somewhere or an appointment that involves someone coming to our house .
When I was working full time, I was exhausted by the time I got home, with little energy left over for housework. Being my own boss is amazing because my schedule is flexible. Working From Home: Why I Love It, and Why You Should, Too
Even if you are an ambivert, extrovert or introvert you would love to work in tranquility. You can be at the coffee shop, traveling, at the beach or at my friends flat. No need to ask for a holiday’s leave or a day off.
Set the away message on both phone and email at close of day and stick to it or you will find your day begins much earlier than you planned and will often go much later than desired. Sounds strange, but whenever people ask me the most important tech investment I’ve made for my home office, it’s never what you think. Sure, all the cloud-based-remote-connectivity-collaboration-communication tools are essential. But it was the lighting that had the biggest effect on me. I set the mood with lighting depending on the time of day, the weather…even the season. Not only is commuting a drag, but it’s also expensive in many cities.
I’ve learned a lot about working from home and I’d like to share that knowledge. So, to celebrate these 14 years, I’ve come up with 14 things you should be doing if you decide to work from home, instead of going to an office. So, here they are, and not in any order of importance. When I first left my office job I would feel like I really needed to get out of the house, so I would go to a local public library and work for a few hours most days. #5 – I don’t waste time on silly distractions. Offices come with meetings and constant interruptions, while at home I can turn off my phone, ignore the world, and focus without interruption for as long as I need to do so.
I don’t like working from home, and I usually find the question insulting, as it seems to imply that my company is so small that I could easily run it out of my house. It also feels like I’m being asked this question because I’m a woman in my early thirties with a young child, which is equally frustrating. However, as it turns out, these days companies of all sizes have home-based employees — both men and women — and there are a lot of benefits to working from a home office.
